Minimum equipment requirements for arboricultural
training courses

Reference numbers correspond to those in your letter, for each specific course.

All equipment needed for the relevant course must comply with BSEN, EN, AFAG guidelines, and be in a safe and operable condition prior to the course commencement. No equipment is issued, but can be hired from TAMARACK (please enquire for rates).All equipment listed can be purchased from www.tamarackoutdoors.co.uk   If a piece of equipment is found to be inoperable, or does not comply, it cannot be used on the course.


1. CHAINSAW PROTECTIVE EQUIPMENT

Helmet (BSEN 397)
Ear Defenders and visor (BSEN 352)
Chainsaw gloves or mitts with protective guarding in the back of the left hand Chainsaw trousers with all round or, front and hatf rear leg protection for ground use (EN 381.5)
Chainsaw boots with protective guarding in front vamp and instep, and a good grip (BSEN 345 part 2)
Personal first aid kit containing a pair of plastic gloves, a rescusciade and a large wound dressing as a minimum

2. CHAINSAW MAINTENANCE AND GROUND UNITS

Chainsaw ( AFAG 301) rear handled
All relevant maintenance tools! sharpening implements (files, file guides etc)
Fixed on a belt: pulp hook, pulp tongs, personal first aid kit (as above)
Felling lever (0.8m)
2 No High lift wedges for( Medium tree felling course)
Suitable manual winch and all accessories (Medium tree felling,course)

3. TREE CLIMBING EQUIPMENT

Helmet with chin strap (BSEN 397)
Ear Defenders and visor (BSEN 352)
Chainsaw gloves or mitts with protective guarding in the back of the left hand
Chainsaw trousers - All round leg and groin protection for climbing courses (EN381 .5)
Chainsaw boots with protective guarding in front vamp and instep, and a good grip (BSEN 345 part 2)
Sit Harness (pREN 813-1) or Full body Harness (BSEN 361)
Rope, 10mm diameter minimum, nylon or polyester (BS4928) or low stretch ropes for work positioning (pREN 1891)
Prussik loops and strops of same construction as rope
Minimum of 5 karabiners, 3 position twist locking, 2300kg rating
A sharp knife with retractable blade.

4. CHAINSAW (AFAG 308) Top handled chainsaws for climbing courses only

5. FUEL AND OIL To last the duration of the course

6. LEATHER PALMED WORK GLOVES

7. SAFETY WORK BOOTS

8. HELMET (BSEN 397)
